Tottenham vs Manchester City Preview
Manchester City are the favourites when they travel to Tottenham for the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinal first leg on Tuesday night.
Pep Guardiola’s side are in contention to win the quadruple. They have already won the Carabao Cup, defeating Chelsea on penalties. The Citizens are through to the final of the FA Cup and will face Watford at the Wembley in May.
Back-to-back league titles are in their grasp as they trail Liverpool by two points but have a game in hand. Finally, they are one of the favourites to win Europe’s premier competition along with Barcelona and Juventus.
Manchester City topped their group which also consisted of Lyon, Hoffenheim and Shakhtar Donetsk. They drew Bundesliga side Schalke in the round of 16 and won with a 10-2 aggregate, including a 7-0 thumping in the second leg. Thus, the Manchester side are a genuine force to reckon.
While their opponents do not boast of a similar season or squad, they are no mugs either. Tottenham survived their group of death, which consisted of Barcelona, Inter Milan and PSV Eindhoven. Mauricio Pochettino’s men lost their first two games and drew their third before staging a remarkable comeback in the final three games to get out of the group.
Their efforts were rewarded with a round of 16 draw against Borussia Dortmund and the German side were considered the favourites to progress. However, Spurs won the tie 4-0 on aggregate to set up a quarterfinal clash with City.
Further, the first leg will take place in Spurs’ new stadium, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. This should give the home side an extra incentive to create a good piece of history in their first-ever European game at the new stadium.
Tottenham vs Manchester City News
In terms of team news, Pochettino will be without Eric Dier, Erik Lamela and Serge Aurier. Fernando Llorente is cleared from concussion and is set to be a part of the matchday squad.
Pep Guardiola was handed a fitness boost as star forward Sergio Aguero returned to training. Oleksandr Zinchenko and Claudio Bravo are sure to miss out while Fabian Delph is a doubt for the game. Full-backs Kyle Walker and Benjamin Mendy are expected to be ready for the tie giving the City boss a plethora of options to choose from.
Tottenham vs Manchester Prediction
Form-wise, City trump Tottenham comfortably. The Manchester side have won nine of their last 10 games while the hosts picked up just 4 points in their last 6 PL games. However, if there is any side who can replicate Liverpool’s high-pressing system to suffocate City like last season’s UCL quarterfinals, it is Spurs.
Further, Pochettino’s side were not involved over the weekend, giving his side extra days to prepare while the Citizens took part in the FA Cup semifinal. In terms of head-to-head, this is the first meeting between the sides in Europe. City have won their last 3 PL games against Spurs but have lost their last 4 European ties against English sides.
Thus, a lot can be expected to happen with two attack-minded sides who know each other well going at it. Both the teams can be expected to score with the more efficient side scoring a potential winner or two.
