A faltering Real Madrid will attempt to spruce up their season when they host Villareal at the Santiago Bernabeu on Sunday. Check Real Madrid vs Villarreal Predictions and Lineup
Real Madrid Preview
Real have endured a tough season this time. They are currently 3rd in the table, a whopping 18 points behind champions Barcelona. Ajax knocked them out of the Champions League in the Round of 16. The Dutch side won 4-1 at the Bernabeu in what was one of the most embarrassing nights for the Los Blancos. Santiago Solari was the manager of Real at that time, but that has changed.
Zinedine Zidane was appointed as the boss shortly after. Zidane left the club in 2018 after a hugely successful spell delivered three Champions League titles and one league title. Emulating that Real Madrid side was always going to be tough, and the Frenchman has a lot of work to do. Real have not impressed hugely since his arrival, and major recruitment in the summer is necessary.
Their recent form has also not been particularly impressive. Real have won two of their last La Liga games. They lost last week, as Rayo Vallecano inflicted a 1-0 defeat upon them. Rayo are second-last in the table, and that result out of the blue. Third place is secure for Zidane’s side as they are 10 points above Getafe in fourth. Second place is also out of the reach, and neighbours Atletico should clinch that position. With two league games left to play, Zidane must be keen on finishing the season on a high.
Meanwhile, opponents Villarreal are in a rich vein of form. They are unbeaten in their last four league games, winning three of them. Those wins came against Real Sociedad, Girona, and Leganes. The points gained were crucial, and Villarreal are clear of relegation for now. They are in 14th place, and 5 points clear of the danger zone. Three sides lie between them and 18th place, and coach Javier Calleja will be confident.
Huesca drew 1-1 with them last week, as Pablo Fornals’ opener was cancelled out Ezequiel Avila. That game broke their three-match league winning streak, but all is not lost. Calleja knows that a couple of points in the coming games will be enough to clinch survival. Beating Real at the Bernabeu has not been that daunting a task this season, and Villarreal should fancy their chances considering the form they’re in.
A brace from Santi Cazorla rescued a point for Villarreal when these two sides met earlier this season. Cazorla will be a key player yet again for them, as the midfielder has revived his career this campaign. Karim Benzema will lead the line for Real, and he has been in form in recent weeks.
Real Madrid vs Villarreal Predictions of 5 May 2019.
This game is a tough one to call, as Real are not exuding much confidence at the moment. Both sides should score in this one, and the total goals should be more than 2.5 in the game. Villarreal have given tough matches to the top sides, and something similar could be seen at the Bernabeu on Sunday.
